When it’s time to reorder your Afex collection bag, one small detail can make you pause: vented or non-vented? Both 500 mL day bags may look similar, but the vent changes how air escapes as the bag fills. Knowing what that means can make choosing your replacement a little easier.

What the vent does

As a collection bag fills with urine, it also needs to displace air. In a sealed bag, air has nowhere to go. As the bag fills, internal pressure can build slightly and slow the rate at which urine flows in.

A vented bag has a small filtered air vent that lets displaced air escape while keeping liquid inside. This helps flow stay consistent as the bag fills.

When venting matters

The difference may be more noticeable for users with higher output, or anyone who finds the bag feels full before it looks full.

Position can matter too. When seated for long periods or using a wheelchair, the tubing run may be less favourable to gravity. A vented bag removes back-pressure as one variable. If drainage seems slower while seated, check the setup and connections with your care team. Our article on wheelchair incontinence care covers related practical considerations.

For users with lower output who empty regularly, a non-vented bag may perform as expected. If drainage has not been an issue, there may be no reason to switch solely because a vented option exists.

Capacity

The 500 mL day bags, vented A400V and non-vented A400B, are compact daytime options.

The 1000 mL extra-capacity bag, A400E holds twice as much as a 500 mL bag. It may suit longer outings, though it adds bulk and weight when full.

The 2000 mL bedside bag, A400X is designed for overnight use. It hangs beside the bed, below the level of the receptacle. The 1200 mL leg bag, A400L, is secured to the leg for daytime wear.

Mixing within a routine

Some established users keep different bags for different settings: a 500 mL option for ordinary days, a 1000 mL bag for longer outings, and a bedside bag overnight. The right combination depends on your routine and compatible components.

What to check when reordering

Vented and non-vented bags have similar part codes, so check the code on your current packaging rather than relying on the description alone.

Confirm that the connector matches your extension tube assembly and check the pack quantity. If you are unsure which version you use, our team can identify it from the part code. Browse the Afex accessories collection to compare related components.
